Project Gutenberg is the largest single collection of free books on the web and the website is maintained by volunteers where public domain books are made available in digital format (ebook). A public domain book is one that no longer has any copyright, that is, the copyright term has expired and now the book is free to use in any way you want. The laws might vary in the country you live.
So the guys at Project Gutenberg are locating these books, converting them in electronic format and making them available for free to the general public. You can also help by being a volunteer yourself or donate money to the project. Find out how you can help by being a volunteer here.
There are currently over 25000 free books in their database and you can search them by title or author name using their search feature. Some of the most downloaded ebooks from the site are The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë and many more.
One has to appreciate the effort these volunteers are putting to make the books accessible to the world. If you too find that the site is of great value to the Internet community, please spread the word around about Project Gutenberg among your circle of friends.
