I came across this site some days ago on the TV news, so I decided to blog about it since it’s for a good cause, to help end world hunger.

FreeRice Homepage

FreeRice is a website established in October 2007. The concept of the site is very simple actually. You donate 20 grains of rice to the UN World Food Program each time you get a word definition right. They have a large number of word definitions from dictionaries, thesauruses and books of synonyms in their database.

You are improving your English vocabulary and at the same time being a part of this good cause. It is obvious that improving your vocabulary will help you in many aspects of your life, whether it is to be more effective at your job or improve your grades in school.

It’s actually a smart word game, the program determines your difficulty level appropriately depending on how you answer. Each time you get an answer correct, 20 grains of rice is donated on your behalf. There’s nothing else for you to do. Once the site says you donated, then it’s been donated, even if you close the browser after a few questions. That’s not all, you can also hear how the words are pronounced.

The rice is paid for by the sponsors who advertise their banners on the bottom of the site. And they really do donate the rice, you can see them donating FreeRice in Bangladesh in this video.

I believe this is a big step in helping to end poverty in the World. Every Internet user should be part of it. All it takes is to answer some questions and you could be avoiding someone’s hunger-related death. So, please join us at FreeRice and let’s make a difference.
